Milestones and Activities

  • January 2020: The Free Korean Association (FKA) was established in Virginia.

  • March 3, 2020: Hosted a welcoming meeting for North Korean soldier Oh Cheong-seong, who defected at Panmunjom.

  • July 28, 2020: Held the first member retreat in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

  • December 25, 2021: Organized the second member retreat in Bethesda, Maryland.

  • May 30, 2022: Visited Arlington National Cemetery and the Korean War Memorial in Virginia.

  • July 2022: Conducted the third member retreat in Maryland.

  • June 9, 2023: Held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Communist Victims Memorial Service.

  • August 2023: Hosted the third Free Korean Association training session in Maryland.

  • September 2023: Held a conversation with Julie Turner, U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights.

  • October 2023: Attended the oath ceremony of Julie Turner, U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights.

  • November 2023: Celebrated the 4th anniversary of the Free Korean Association.

  • 2023: Provided financial support, including $300 for North Korean defectors and $1,000 for North Korean missionary support.

  • March 2024: Launched a 10,000-signature campaign to establish a memorial for victims sacrificed by the North Korean regime.

  • May 25, 2024: Formed the FKA Board of Directors and elected Oh Gong-dan as Chairman.

  • July 2024:

    • Presented a briefing on the establishment of the memorial at the North Korea Freedom Coalition meeting.

    • Announced the memorial at the North Korean Defectors’ Day event on July 14.

    • Oh Gong-dan provided a briefing to U.S. Special Envoy Julie Turner on July 29.

  • August 15, 2024: Appointed Roberta Cohen, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, as FKA Senior Advisor.

  • September 7, 2024: Held the Free Korean Association Chuseok event.

  • October 18, 2024: Participated in the U.S. State Department North Korean Human Rights Network event.

  • November 2024:

    • As of November, collected 2,000 signatures out of the 10,000 needed for the memorial campaign.

    • Raised $16,703 for the memorial as of November 20.
